History at Grange Primary School

History and Geography are central to the curriculum at Grange Primary School and are the focus of our half-termly topics.  We take a creative approach to the curriculum so that children become fully immersed in each of these subjects and come away with a secure knowledge base.  We believe creativity is crucial in enabling children to achieve high standards and give them a more deepened understanding.

HISTORY

In the teaching and learning of history, children learn about significant events in British history as well as history from different periods around the world and significant individuals. Through History topics, we aim to develop the following key skills in our children:

  • critical thinking (encouraging them to contrast and compare different accounts);
  • knowledge and understanding of people, events and different contexts in the past;
  • evaluation (being able to reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of a range of different Historical sources);
  • communication (sharing their opinions both in written terms and in debates with others);
  • research;
  • curiosity about the past and how and why people interpret the past in different ways.

Where possible we aim for each year group to undertake at least one Historical visit or receive a visitor in school each year in order to support the development of these skills.
